I was a trial lawyer so it resonated when I read your recognition that written work rarely flows as spoken word. It goes the other way around, too: think of rap music and pop songs, which hold our attention from the syncopation of the voice far more than the content of the piece. I read Kendrick lyrics and was baffled by the adulation—and then for the first time I saw the SB performance and was enthralled. When I prepared for closing arguments—the defense attorney’s sole opportunity to shine—I wrote some great, stirring stuff. Then I practiced in front of others and within minutes saw and felt the wrongness of every word.
This makes me want to check out your book! Also feeling "that what’s happening had irreversibly turned off the creative part of my brain," and struggling with that a lot these days. I guess I'm glad it's not just me, but what a loss for all of us — among the many other losses we're facing. Glad it wasn't irreversible for you!!
So interesting about reading your book for an audio recording. My second novel will be recorded, as was my first. By someone else. Yet, just yesterday, after reading a bit from the new book for a zoom event, I was told by a couple of listeners that I should read my book myself for the audio. Problem is, I never do anything the same way twice, and I would definitely mess it up more times than not, still it is tempting.
I need to get to Kingston and Rough Draft. I was supposed to be there way back in 2019 when my first book came out, then stuff got in the way, then covid, and then, and then. My son lives in Red Hook. I know the way!
Congratulations on all the things! So impressive!

Thanks, Rosana! Sorry to hear you've experienced this, too, but also glad to know I'm not the only one. I hope it gets reversed for you, too!
I’m excited to hear the audio version! It’s sounds like recording it was a challenging and rewarding experience - brava!
Thanks, Steph! 😘
Please come on my podcast and talk about this and so much more!
I’d love to!

Congrats. It's great that there's a voice actor involved!
